Boston

There were some super-cheap airfares coming out of DFW and my mother looked at me one night and said "Hey Dianna, do you want to go to Boston?" I've barely been up where our country started, except a trip to New York City back when I was a kid, and the only thing I could say after that was "Well DUH!" So we're going to Boston for a week. Just the two of us, which will be a nice change. I love my Dad and Brother, and really and truly do, but sometimes I want them to just go away. My brother tends to complain, extensively, and my Dad does the internal pout if we don't go by what he wants to do.

I had to juggle a few school things, like tests and whatnot, but that's alright. I figured it out and now all I have to do is pack. The flight leaves really early but I'm alright with that, it was only like $50 roundtrip and I can't really expect optimal leaving hours. I'm just happy that I'm going to be able to try some try New England Clam "Chowdah" and some fresh and awesome sea food.

That and the history of the place, which you just kind of bump into every once in a while. I also want to go to the MIT museum they have there. Mom made a joke that since I was single I needed to bring with me a short skirt and my "geeky" Legend of Zelda hoodie to snag a potential boyfriend who would one day be rich and famous. When I scoffed she just smiled and said "Well Harvard is down the street if that doesn't work." Oh Mothers, what would we do without them?

Anyway I will hopefully have some awesome photos when I come back. I can't grab my Dad's super fancy camera but mine will be decent and I know how to use photoshop to clean it all up a bit. This shall be a good week.

Sunflower Crayons

Have some old Crayons that are broken up and useless? Well here is an awesome way to give them new life! I had a silicone mold in our kitchen that we never use and thought to myself, wouldn't that be adorable for from colorful crayons? And, alas, they were!

First I made this adorable crayon flowers! I had broken crayons lying around my house from a million years ago and thought to myself "what can I even DO with these?" Then I remembered a tutorial I saw online on how to melt them all together!

I just put the snapped crayon pieces in the mold [and put the mold onto a cookie sheet so I could easily move it in and out], put the oven on 325 degrees and waited approximately fifteen minutes for all of them to melt. Took them out of the oven when they were basically liquid and let them cool over night. They came out really great, and were easy to take out of the mold.

I'm going to look to see if I have more crayons lying around. If I do I am totally listing them in my store. The sunflower pattern is just too cute!

My Little Whovian

So I LOVE making things for kids. It is seriously one of my favorite things to do. I'm actually really excited one of my good friend's is having a kid in October because that means I have an excuse to make more of it! I really hope it's a girl but his wife wants a boy. Oh well we'll see who wins out on this one!

Anyway the geek in me came up with the idea of making simple felt books based off the things our geeky selves love. Now I like Star Trek and Star Wars, but I didn't think that was the place to start. So I started off with Doctor Who! The British have a very smart show and it started off as a kids show anyway so why not start them off early?

I know I'm a complete dork but I still like the TARDIS "I" in the title. One of my friends was actually very amazed I could cut felt in cursive. Mad skills!

Have your own little Dalek!

TARDIS that opens up to 10s control panel!

Psychic paper and a mini Sonic Screwdriver

Cybermen! Delete!

It's hard to make but totally well worth it! Looking into making some different ones like Harry Potter and such. There is definitely some cool stuff that can be done with this. Think I might have to make an XMen one for my friend's kid though, he'd enjoy it I'm sure!

Welcome to Threadendipity!

I guess I should give a short background on who I am and how I came to be here.

First of all my name is Dianna. A long time ago I wanted to make my own Halloween costumes and figured that if other people did it then there had to be a way. This started my self-taught sewing addiction. Once I learned of all the different things you could make yourself I was totally hooked, because the thought that I could have something that no one else in the world did excited me. My mother was definitely not a seamstress so it became a very long trial-and-error process but for the most part I got it down. I had always been good at figuring out how things fit together and patterns, even though I couldn't read the ones you got int he stores to save my life, were no different.

I started on the sewing machine and never looked back. I'm going to be getting tutored in the ways of "proper sewing" between my college classes soon. This is mostly to fill in the gaps of things I couldn't really learn on my own. A few areas still elude me but if I figure it all out then things can only go up from there. I'm sure I'll be posting about my misadventures once I have them and document them for the world.

In the areas of not-sewing I figured I could do some of that as well and have been experimenting with it ever since. I've made home made crayons, prop guns for costumes, pouches, very limited metal working, and I'm trying to figure out the mysterious world of leather. Or at least more so on how to make it look good and not like a slob did it. I would also love to learn how to knit, there are so many cute patterns for it I just can't resist!

But as much as I branch out sewing will always be my first love.
